That I Might Save Some

1 Corinthians 9:19-23

One of the most basic communication maxims is, “It’s impossible not to communicate.” We’re always communicating something to people around us, whether intentional or not. Communication is vital to the gospel. After all, Paul wrote “How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard” (Rom.10:14)? The question is, “Are we communicating the gospel?” In this passage we’ll see how Paul went above and beyond to ensure that what he was communicating was actually the gospel.

The Son of Man Came to Seek and to Save the Lost

Luke 19:1-10

In the parables of Luke 15, Jesus asked “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it” (Lk.15:4)? Now in the story of Zacchaeus Jesus literally goes in search of his sheep. By observing Jesus’ search for the lost, we can learn a lot about personal evangelism.

We Do Not Wrestle Against Flesh and Blood

Ephesians 6:10-20

Scripture teaches us that the church has an enemy. Though he is hidden and subtle, he is still destructive. In fact, our enemy is the very personification of evil. Evangelism requires that Christians recognize our enemy and be acquainted with his tactics. In this sermon, we’ll study one of the clearest texts on the topic of spiritual war.

He Was Lost, and Is Found

Luke 15

When you lose something, what determines how long you search for it? It all depends on how much you value what you’ve lost. Jesus told three stories to illustrate this point in Luke 15. We’ll see how Jesus both searches lost people and rejoices when they are found, while the Pharisees do neither. Are you more like Jesus who searched or the Pharisees who did not?

And the Pharisees Grumbled

Luke 15:1-2

Jesus invested a lot of time with sinners, and the religious leaders didn’t like it. He told three of his most famous parables in response to their complaints. Why did he risk his reputation eating and drinking with such undesirable persons? Why didn’t the Pharisees agree with his methods? This simple introduction to chapter fifteen reveals deep insights about both Jesus’ and the Pharisees’ attitudes toward the lost.

A Friend of Sinners

Matthew 9:9-13
Jesus walked right through several religious barriers in order to reach those who were sick and dying from sin. Then he turned and rebuked the Pharisees who had erected those barriers. Jesus’ method of evangelism challenges us all to examine our own hearts. Are we more like Pharisees than we’re ready to admit? Do we really understand Jesus’ mission?

Why Fatherhood Matters

Proverbs 3:1-12
Our world is wracked by the absence of fathers in the home. Countless children are growing up with no father to guide, instruct, and love them. A secondary result of this is that many in our world have concluded that fatherhood doesn’t matter after all. Scripture is counter-cultural in its view of fathers. Not only does God tell us that fathers matter; he requires that they be intentional. If the next generation is to “set their hope in God,” fathers must accept their call to “teach their children.”

But to the Humble He Gives Favor

Various Proverbs
Pride is a soul-destroying disease that affects everyone. The good news is that God has provided us with a remedy: humility. If humility is the answer for our sickness, then it is important that we understand as much as possible about it. In this sermon, we’ll try to understand what humility is and how we can express it.

A Word Fitly Spoken

Various Proverbs
Words are a gift from God; a gift we use countless times every day. Not every word is important, but some are. There are times when we need to speak just the right word that will encourage, comfort, and heal. It’s in these times that God uses us as his instruments to build up one another. One of the most common themes in Proverbs is the power of our words and the opportunities they provide to strengthen the souls of those around us. In order to be consistent in this, we must be able to do something that James says can never be done: tame the tongue.
