Needing the Spirit of God for the Mission of God

Ephesians 3:14-21
Paul knows that the Ephesians desperately needed the Spirt of God to provide spiritual strength for them to endure and persevere. A life lived as “ministers of the gospel” in a dark and broken world is not something that we can do on our own power. We need Christ’s resources for Christ’s work.

Fighting for Faith

Ephesians 6:10-20
In this final sermon in a series, we examine the work of God’s word in his church. The Bible describes a great war that is being waged. The battles are spiritual in nature, and require spiritual strength. This strength isn’t something we muster up on our own, but rather comes from God himself. It is a fight for faith–a battle against unbelief. Today we examine the struggle, and the primary role of God’s word in strengthening our souls.

Gospel Change

Various Texts
For different reasons, we don’t like change. But there is a change that is good. It comes about as God works upon our souls to transform us into the likeness of his Son. As he does this in one life after another, the church as a whole will be transformed. That’s because the church isn’t an institution; it’s the people of God. For example, not only will I have a distaste for pride in my own life, but also I’ll begin to humbly serve others in the church. As God transforms one, two, or three of the people in a church, then the whole church begins to change. God works this transformation within the Body by his Spirit through his Word.

We Do Not Wrestle Against Flesh and Blood

Ephesians 6:10-20

Scripture teaches us that the church has an enemy. Though he is hidden and subtle, he is still destructive. In fact, our enemy is the very personification of evil. Evangelism requires that Christians recognize our enemy and be acquainted with his tactics. In this sermon, we’ll study one of the clearest texts on the topic of spiritual war.

Made Alive in Christ

Ephesians 2:1-10
God uses the most dramatic contrast to describe spiritual life: you’re either dead or alive. Deadness manifests itself in different ways that we can see and experience every day. God has, however, resurrected his people to live a new life in which the deadness is slowly fading away, giving way to a new and greater reality: God has made us alive in Christ.

Equip the Saints

Ephesians 4:11-16
Jesus declared “I will build my church.” We can see in this text that Jesus’ plan for building his church is the ministry of His word. The church is built up as the members minister the word of God to one another. Speaking the truth in love to one another is a vital aspect of spiritual maturity. Both gospel proclamation and gospel conversation work in unison to deepen the roots of believers in the church.

The Exalted Son

Ephesians 1
Cultural ideas of Jesus often influence our thoughts of Him. A crucifix, a frail figure in a long robe, etc. Scripture, however, gives us a clear–and very different–picture of Christ after His death and resurrection. He is exalted at the right hand of the Father. In this sermon, we’ll complete our short study of Christ’s death and resurrection.
