What is Awana?
Awana is a children's club that offers a safe, positive and fun environment in which children can grow spiritually. The core element of our program is Scripture memorization. Each child receives a handbook to take home and work on with their parents throughout the week. At our meetings they recite their verses, play games, learn about the Gospel through a short teaching lesson and just have fun being kids. At East Madison Baptist Church, this club is led by church members who volunteer their time, energy and resources to bring children to Christ and minister to them with God's Word.
What does "Awana" mean?
The name "AWANA" stands for "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed," and is inspired by 2 Timothy 2:15:
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
What is Awana's mission?
Awana's goal is to train children to fulfill this verse's commands through:
- Outreach and sharing the Gospel with children
- Bible study
- Encouraging godly characteristics
- Memorization and comprehension of God's Word
In order to reach this goal, Awana strives to teach children biblical truths in four separate sections:
- Worship during Song Time
- Fellowship during Game Time
- Bible memorization and study during Handbook Time
- Discipleship and ministry during Council Time
What else should I know about Awana?
In addition to spiritual edification, Awana clubbers are given the incentive of awards such as uniforms, various patches, badges and pins, and ultimately trophies as a reward for memorizing verses and completing Bible studies.
How do I get involved?
Awana meets at East Madison Baptist Church on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:00 during the school year. All children ages preschool through high school are welcome.
